As Indirect Tax Manager, your essential job functions will include the following:

Business Support-Including Integration of Law Changes

  • Perform research and analysis, including monitoring tax legislative updates related to indirect tax, and applying research to support technical positions related to the Company’s business transactions.
  • Collaborate with internal business partners in Sales, IT, Program Management and AR/AP related to Vertex items or other business needs.
  • Participate as indirect tax lead on company projects; ensure proper tax planning, considerations and testing of any implementations before go-live dates.
  • Manage each entity group within Dealer Tire regarding their responsibilities related to sales/use tax.

Sales and Use Tax / Property Tax Compliance

  • Analyze the monthly sales and use tax reports to verify accuracy, including manipulation to support compliance filings.
  • Review invoices and conduct necessary tax research to determine correct taxability for AP.
  • Manage exemption certificate collection process.
  • In-house resource for business inquiries relating to sales/use taxes.
  • Ability to prepare and electronically file all sales & use tax returns for all entities in registered states.
  • Prepare/Review Sales/Use tax returns for completeness/accuracy and ensure timely filings.
  • Prepare / Review Personal Property tax returns for completeness and accuracy, ensuring all returns are filed timely.  Work with tax advisors on planning opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with state/local tax laws & regulations, including implementation of new taxes.
  • Responsible for reconciliations and posting of journal entries for sales & use tax related accounts; Requires analysis and review of general ledger activity to ensure accuracy and completeness of amounts/balances.
  • Coordinate and manage indirect tax registrations in new jurisdictions.

Automated Sales and Use Tax Systems Maintenance

  • Support maintenance of indirect tax engine (Vertex) including setting up new product code mappings and running compliance tax reports.
  • Identify and implement system improvements when necessary.
  • Technical ability to manage all facets of the tax software across multiple entities and multiple states.
  • Continuous process improvement to utilize new software tools, such as Alteryx and Business Intelligence software.
  • Responsible for assessing and validating all Vertex and/or other software system integrations, updates and upgrades across multiple entities and states.

Other Responsibilities

  • Manage indirect tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities, including gathering and analyzing relevant data as well as preparing responses to communicate directly with auditors.
  • Process all tax notices and bills and execute the Company’s response to all US indirect tax notices.
  • Assist with Voluntary Disclosure Agreements (VDA’s) projects with outside providers.
  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies to optimize indirect tax position, minimize tax liabilities, and maximize tax savings opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Tax Director and third-party consultants to evaluate and execute tax strategies associated with corporate transactions, as needed.
  • Manage other indirect filings, including tire fees, business license registrations and renewals, various gross receipts and excise tax returns, and others.
  • Potential opportunity to be involved in state and local income tax compliance.

Mentoring and Coaching

  • Communicate operational priorities and goals. 
  • Facilitate problem solving and collaboration.
  • Serves as a mentor and a coach to less experienced associates and/or interns.

Other Duties as Assigned

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.
  • 10+ years of progressively more responsible Tax assignments, with at least 2 years managing Indirect Tax compliance.
  • Experience using Vertex or other indirect tax engine required.
  • Experience using JDE (JD Edwards), or other major ERP systems required.
  • Intermediate to Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Power Point and Word.
  • Ability to work effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Highly developed verbal & written communication skills. 
  • Ability to manage people, processes & projects.
  • A visible and enthusiastic leader internally.  Has the personal courage to recommend/make tough decisions.
  • Able to analyze and grasp a situation quickly from different perspectives and create well-reasoned solutions.

The compensation offered for this position will depend on qualifications, experience, and geographic location. The total compensation package may also include commission, bonus or profit sharing. Base Pay Range:

$115,000-$140,000
