Title:                            Manager, Leave and Disability Management

As a Manager, Leave and Disability Management your essential job functions will include the following:

Operational Management

  • Directly responsible for the overall effectiveness of leave, accommodation and worker’s compensation programs including knowledge of best practices in process, technology and system solutions for leave and worker’s compensation operations.
  • Maintains and oversees long term and complex continuous leaves, monthly leave reports and education of staff in leave disability management policies, procedures and practices.
  • Designs and recommends changes in policy by working with internal stakeholders to monitor effectiveness of programs and changes required by law and/or contractual agreement.
  • Acts as a resource to educate HR staff, department management and associates on Leave of Absence (LOA) policies, procedures, and federal and state requirements; as well as to aid in employees understanding of benefits offered and eligibility requirements through individual and group meetings or training sessions. Support and develop competence among HR staff to answer questions.
  • Stays abreast of trends and innovations in the field of Leaves of Absence and Worker’s Compensation. Keeps current on legislative and regulatory issues at the State and Federal level (FMLA, Pregnancy Discrimination Act, ADA, STD, LTD, Sick Leave Laws, etc.).
  • Proactively plans and manages Dealer Tire’s portfolio of leave cases, identifying solutions that adhere to the Company’s Core Values and regulatory requirements prior to deadlines being reached.
  • Develops metrics to measure program success and implements regular reporting for the operation.

Service Center

  • Meets and collaborates regularly with managers (business and People Department), Employee Relations and the HR Business Partner Team to develop sound strategies for a mutually beneficial resolution to leave management cases..
  • Actively utilizes subject matter expertise in decision making and consultation to the business and to team, as well as point of escalation on leave issues.
  • Manages external vendors to ensure proper coordination of activity; works with insurance broker to identify best practice approaches to lower costs overall.
  • Provides support to managers in implementing and monitoring lost time initiatives at the operational level.
  • Drives continuous improvement around leave and worker’s compensation operations and processes, working closely with partners inside and outside of HR to optimize process design and improve associate experience.

Leadership, Mentoring and Coaching

  • Foster teamwork, innovation, resolution and inclusion.
  • Full responsibility for building, leading and developing a Leave Administration team..
  • Manages team performance to expectations for service standards for timeliness, accuracy and management of leaves
  • Own the completion of a performance evaluation for each team member and recommend appropriate action such as promotions, counseling and termination.
  • Delegate significant responsibilities; empower staff to act while providing hands on coaching.
  • Identify talent gaps to achieve business goals and implement strategies to close gaps.

Other Duties as Assigned

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  Master’s degree preferred.  Experience accepted in lieu of degree
  • 5 years’ experience and expertise in leave administration, workers compensation or absence management in a multi-state environment; both non-exempt and exempt as well as multi-state
  • Preferred: Risk Management and/or Human Resources, with direct experience administering leave administration, workers’ compensation and/or absence management programs
  • Experience in all aspects of managing employees, including work assignments, development and performance.
  • Experience and expertise with outsourcing and vendor management
  • Experience managing process improvement initiative
  • Proven ability to influence those outside of his/her span of authority
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with executives and with associates at all levels
  • Excellent judgement and demonstrated communication skills
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word and other standard office program

Physical Job Requirements

  • Continuous viewing from and inputting data to a computer screen.
  • Travel as necessary (approximately 30%).
